At the Geneseo Food Pantry, we focus on encouraging clients to make wise choices to stretch their food dollars. A representative from the University of Illinois Extension Outreach Program is periodically available when clients come to pick up food. She provides low cost recipe ideas using ingredients that the Food Pantry has available. She also takes a minute to speak personally with each client, helping them find low cost nutritional foods that all members of the family enjoy, and her help is appreciated.
Food Pantry clients can shop for clothing and household items once per week. On the second floor there are clothes, accessories, sheets, blankets, towels, kitchen items, small appliances, decorations, toys, books, CDs, videos, games, and puzzles. Our clients would appreciate any of these items you can donate. We often run low on baby clothes, smaller size men’s clothes, dishes, and towels.
The Geneseo Food Pantry Building Fund has received a total of $956,858 in cash and pledges, and it has received a number of in-kind pledges. We are so grateful for the support of the community during our capital campaign! Many businesses, churches, groups and individuals contributed toward the goal, and we thank them for joining us in fighting hunger and building hope! The plan is to break ground at the new location, 550 Dilenbeck Dr., in the spring.
Our volunteer of the month, Sue DeSmith, has been volunteering at the Food Pantry for ten months. She packs the food the clients have chosen from their lists. Sue said the best thing about volunteering at the Food Pantry is that she likes to help people. Her most memorable experience at the Food Pantry was when one of the clients kept saying thank you the whole time she was there. It was heartwarming and the gratitude was evident.
