2017 St. Malachy STEAM Fair: Tuesday, 3.14 (Pi Day)

6th Grade Inquiring Minds

Full Steam Ahead in 5th Grade

Fifth Grade students researched many STEAM projects and spent weeks making posters, researching and constructing their project. Working in small groups the class presented eight exciting projects.

Lava Lamps demonstrated the different densities of water in cooking oil.

Another group created Kaleidoscopes to teach about light and reflection.

The Forces of Water used pencils and water reacting over the force of a battery.

Forces of Motion showed how the world is moving because of an atom.

The Rube Goldberg Machine showed how to complete a very simple task in a complicated way.

Three boys engineered a small, stable home for Tornado-Proof Housing.

Get Crackin' With Egg Incubators demonstrated the effects of heat and humidity on fertilized eggs.

Delicious Science States of Matter showed what happens when water freezes, and provided a recipe for ice cream!

4th Grade: Galimotos-The Universal Joy of Problem Solving

The inspiration for Fourth Grade's STEAM project came from an article written by a high school teacher from Michigan who was on a safari in Africa. He visited a small village where children ran and played with homemade toys, like cars and trucks, all made from scrap wire, plastic containers and other throw-away items.

The children called these toys "galimotos."

To prepare for the STEAM project Fourth Grade read the book Galimotos, studied the African culture of Malawi, used their imaginations, artistic and engineering skills to create a toy using only discarded material, while learning much about trial and error along the way. Fourth Grade demonstrated their galimotos in motion and got visitors to the STEAM Fair involved by letting others play with them!

3rd Grade is Cookin' Up Science

Third Grade was busy in the kitchen! Each student chose a math or science topic and then found a way to demonstrate the topic with food. Everyone designed a plate with key terms to help explain their subject and wore aprons of their own design with catchy slogans to add a little flair. Along with easy to digest information about their math or science topics, Third Grade also handed out samples of the food they prepared!

2nd Grade: Our Solar System

Second Grade spent a lot of time researching planets. They studied their colors, features, size, and distance from the Sun. In 3 small groups they used imagination to design models of the Solar System. Each student made a paper mache planet in art class and then the rest of the planets had to be made out of different materials. They painted their planets the correct colors and put them in the correct order. Second Grade was excited to share their research!

1st Grade's Colony of Penguins

S is for Science:  Each First Grader chose a different species of penguin to research.  They learned lots of facts about penguins and wrote a report.

T is for Technology:  Students used chromebooks to look up information. In Computer class, they learned how to copy, paste, and print out pictures of penguins.

E is for Engineering:  First Grade used cardboard, tape, and good thinking skills to figure out how to make their penguins stand on their own.

A is for Arts:  Students made practice sketches of penguins before drawing the real one on cardboard.  They looked at pictures to paint them the right colors.  It was fun to be creative!

M is for Math:  First Grade looked up the average size of each penguin species.  They measured its height on the cardboard before drawing.  Their models showed the real-life size of each penguin species.

Kindergarten Presents Our Amazing Bodies

Kindergarten learned all about our wonderful body. They learned about the parts of our body and how they all work together. They learned about how we can keep our body healthy and loved making a skeleton. The had fun drawing a life size picture of their body. Using math skills, Kindergarten estimated how tall they are and then measured their actual height with a ruler. The class sang an exercise song and danced using rhythm sticks. Kindergarten is thankful to God for our wonderful bodies!
